The overhead conveyor has a number of monorail buffer or transport tracks in parallel rows on the same plane, on which conveyor units move. A transfer mechanism moves one conveyor unit between parallel tracks at right angles in front of the tracks and consists of a carriage, on which a container moves towards the parallel tracks, when the transfer unit is stopped. The container has a rail (21) on a support (19), which is moved on ball bearings (16,17) on profiled bars (18), associated with the carriage. An electric drive-mechanism (12), fixed to the side (11) of the carriage plate (10) has a gear (13) cooperating with a toothed rack (14). -
