Prodn. of composite bodies by dip-coating the workpiece (3) at least partly in a metal melt (1), has the novelty that the melt comprises an alloy or an alloy and an metal-non-metal cpd., made from a high strength steel and/or a metal carbide, metal nitride, metal carbonitride or metal boride. The wear-resistant metal coating is formed in vacuum by deposition of successive coatings in a continuous process. After the crystallisation of the individual layers, the workpiece is periodically removed, rotated using a drive shaft (2) and subject to pressure contact with one or more cooled shaped rollers (4) to plastically deform the layer. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for the prodn. of e.g. free-cutting tools. A layer with improved wear-resistance and refined structure is produced.
