A magnetising and read-out device (16) operates in the region of a neutral fibre (13) of the wheel type, which is free from nominal pulling and compression forces. Windings (20) are arranged periodically in cut-outs in the ferromagnetic rail (18), and between them are poles (21) of the read/write device (19). The windings are set back in the cut-outs, away from the running face (22), and the space above is filled with unmangetised steel cover (23). The strength of the magnetisation is such as to inprint coded data onto the remanent magnetism of the stress-free neutral zone. ADVANTAGE - Reduced effort to read and write data.
