The invention relates to a differential with limited self-locking for a motor vehicle. It comprises two internal gears 19, 20, which are supported in a carrier 13. The internal gears 19, 20 mesh with spur gears 27 and 31 respectively. The two spur gears 27 and 31 in turn mesh with one another. One of the spur gears, spur gear 31, is designed with a larger number of teeth and hence a larger diameter than the other spur gear 27. The larger spur gear 31 has a recess 35, in which a brake device, for example in the form of a fluid friction coupling, is arranged. The outer plates 40 are connected in a non-rotational manner to the large spur gear 31 and the inner plates 43 to a driving gear 42. The driving gear 42 meshes by means of its toothed gear section 44 with the teeth of the right-hand internal gear 20. As a result, an additional braking force which, however, is controlled as a function of the differential speed and is generated by the brake unit 38 is superimposed on the locking action, which is generated by the friction of the spur gears 27, 31 in the pockets of the carrier.
