PURPOSE:To make it possible to obtain both a low coercive force and a large saturation magnetic flux density, by employing a magnetic metal powder which contains Ni at a specific ratio and iron as the other principal component. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic metal powder which contains 10-50wt% Ni and iron as the other principal component is employed as a ferromagnetic metal powder for magnetic recording. Such composition makes it possible to obtain a magnetic recording ferromagnetic metal powder having a coercive force of 550-900 Oe and a saturation magnetic flux density of 90-170emu/g. More specifically, before the reducing process, an Ni compound is attached, adsorbed or deposited on the surface of iron oxyhydroxide or iron oxide having an average major axis length of 0.5-5mum and an average minor axis length of 0.02- 0.5mum. Thereafter, this iron oxyhydroxide or iron oxide is subjected to dry reduction by means of a reducing gas to form an alloy of Ni having fine iron as its main body. Thus, it is possible to prevent any deformation of the shape and sintering, and it is possible to obtain a stable ferromagnetic metal powder having a desired coercive force and angular derivative ratio.
