Catalysts for use in the pyrolytic decomposition of a phenol distillation residue resulting from the separation by distillation of cumene, phenol and acetone from a reaction mixture obtained by oxidizing cumene with molecular oxygen followed by acid cleavage, are characterized by comprising an oxygen-containing metallic compound having a particle diameter of 0.002-100 mu m. When said phenol distillation residue is pyrolysed at 200 to 350 DEG C, in the presence of such a catalyst such useful substances as cumene and phenol can be recovered.
