The invention relates to a pulsed ultrasonic Doppler method and to equipment provided for carrying it out for examining the rheological relationships in a fluid flow 5 containing a large number of small particles, an average particle velocity being determined on the basis of the Doppler effect occurring during the back scatter of the sound from the particles. In order to obtain particularly effective information relating to particle agglomeration dependent on the degree of shear at precisely defined points in the flow 5, the invention provides that, in the evaluation, both a characteristic average frequency and a scattering factor are in each case determined or extracted, synchronously for the same volume region, from a number of Doppler frequency signal spectra each obtained from one and the same of the discrete volume regions of the particle flow 5, which are sampled step by step, and that, for each of the said volume regions, the average frequency obtained is used to determine an average velocity of the particles and, associated with this, the determined scattering factor is used in each case to determine the size and/or shape of the particles and/or particle aggregates in the same volume region, and that these mutually associated values are in each case fed to a storage and/or output unit 15 and are output by the latter, associated with one another, preferably in the form of particle-velocity and particle-size profiles.
