The underwater target searching system has a large reception angular range and a good angular resolution are achieved by providing on the front surface of the search head a cross-shaped transducer arrangement consisting of a vertical column and a horizontal line which each consists of several individual transducers. The vertical transducer column is used as a transmission transducer for generating a vertically tiltable transmission beam broad in the horizontal direction but strongly focussed (thin) in the vertical direction. With the horizontal reception transducer line, several overlapping reception direction beams distributed about a broad horizontal range may be generated and the received echo signals are determined with respect to their angular deviation in relation to the longitudinal axis of the torpedo. Each reception beam has a large vertical spread but a narrow horizontal spread.
