PURPOSE:To illuminate a reticle efficiently by disposing one end of an optical fiber for illumination of the reticle opposite to a light source and disposing the other end between an objective lens system and a focusing lens system opposite to the reticle. CONSTITUTION:An optical system of a telescope 1 for surveying machines consists of an objective lens 2, a focusing lens 4, an erect prism 6, a reticle 8, and an eyepiece lens 10. A dichroic prism 12, an optical path splitting prism 14, a light emitting element 16, and a photodetector 18 are disposed between the lens 2 and the lens 4 and on the sides thereof. A reticle illuminating system 27 consisting of a lamp 20, a condenser lens 22, a mirror 24, and an optical fiber 26 is provided on the outside part of the telescope 1, and the exit end 28 of the fiber 26 is disposed between the lens 2 and the prism 12, optically opposite to the reticle 8.
