A membrane fraction with alcohol oxidase activity is prepd. by (i) cultivating alkane-utilising yeasts, (ii) harvesting and breaking down the yeast cells and (iii) recovering the enzyme-contg. membrane fraction, the processing stages being carried out in the dark, and (iv) subsequently drying the microsomal membrane fraction. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process gives membrane fractions with higher alcohol oxidase activity than previous prods. of this type. The membrane fraction recovered is useful for converting alcohols, esp. long chain alcohols, into aldehydes.
