A device for drawing attention to and marking people in distress on land and at sea by visual signs has a fastening strip, to which a gas cartridge is fastened and on which a folded gas balloon is arranged whose filling opening is connected to the gas cartridge valve. In addition, a folded nylon thread of great length is available, whose one end is attached to the gas balloon and the other end to the fastening strip. A clear hood which covers the gas cartridge, the folded gas balloon and the folded nylon thread is fastened to the fastening strip and connected to the gas cartridge valve. A tear-off strip is fastened to the clear hood, which strip serves to tear the clear hood from the fastening strip. Since the clear hood is in connection with the gas cartridge valve, when the clear hood is torn off the gas cartridge valve is simultaneously opened and the gas balloon is inflated. After the gas balloon has been filled it separates from the gas cartridge and rises upwardly into the air and is held there by the nylon thread. The gas balloon consists of plastic or rubber and is inscribed with large luminous letters which can be seen from a great distance. IMAGE
