The arc extinguishing arrangement for a short-circuit-current limiting low-voltage switch has a housing (1), two contact pieces (2, 3) which can be engaged with one another and disengaged from one another in the housing (1), and an insulating wall (4) which can be displaced between the separated contact pieces (2, 3). The insulating wall (4) is equipped with an opening (5) which is provided for the contact pieces (2, 3), which are engaged with one another, to pass through. Between the closed contact pieces (2, 3) and the walls of the housing (1) and the opening (5) surrounding them there is only a gas area which is less than half the contact displaced volume. The insulating wall (4) is provided with thickened regions (6, 7) in the edge region of the opening (5) which lies in the movement direction of the insulating wall (4) when an arc is being extinguished. The thickened regions (6, 7) are guided tightly in additional grooves (8, 9). The additional grooves (8, 9) have a constant cross-section of 20 to 100 times the volume of the contact displaced volume. The additional grooves (8, 9) are connected, by the gas, to a blowing-out area after the section having a constant cross-section.
