When measuring the temperature of a gas in a space by means of a pyrometer (10) provided with a radiation-absorbing screen (11, 12, 16, 17, 27) and a temperature sensor, comprising in particular a thermocouple (23) and for generating an electrical signal dependent on the gas temperature, passing the gas from the space via a gas inlet (13, 14) to the thermocouple (23), then to a gas outlet (21), without sucking the gas from the space, the gas stream being produced by applying a relatively low pressure at the gas outlet (21) by discharge of pressurized air from a nozzle (20) which is preferably disposed at the screen of the pyrometer radiation absorbing. The pressurized air is supplied from a pressurized air source arranged outside the space and is supplied to the nozzle (20) through a conduit of pressurized air (19). In such a pyrometer, one can measure gas temperatures continuous from about 900 to 1200 ° C for the same period extremely long (over 1000 hours), simply by creating a flow velocity through the thermocouple the order of 30 to 50 m / s by the pressurized air supply at a flow rate of about 15 to 100 l / min. The components of the radiation-absorbing screen is made from heat resistant materials such as stainless steel, quartz glass or a ceramic material resistant to high temperatures.
