ABSTRACTIn a fluid administration set for primary fluidwhose flow rate is controlled by a pump, a device isprovided for infusing secondary fluid through theadminstration set without mixing with the primary andsecondary fluids. The device comprises a chamberhaving first and second ends with the first endincluding an output port. Within the chamber, firstand second pistons are releasably locked in a tandemarrangement for slidable movement between first andsecond ends of the chamber. The pistons are moved intandem from the first end of the chamber to aposition in the chamber intermediate the ends so asto divide the chamber into upper and lowerportions. A first means is provided for sliding thepistons along the length of the chamber and forrotating the second piston between first and secondrotational positions. A second means responsive tothe rotation of the second piston decouples the firstand second pistons so that the first means may movethe second piston away from the first piston. Athird means is provided for communicating primaryfluid from an upstream section of the administrationset to a centrally located bore in the second pistonso as to allow the primary fluid to fill the volumecreated by the decoupling of the second piston fromthe first piston. A fourth means is provided forlocking the second piston in a position within thechamber such that delivery of pressurized fluid bythe pump into the volume between the decoupled firstand second piston causes the first piston to slidablymove toward the first end of the chamber, therebymetering the secondary fluid into the patient.
