An arrangement for mechanical seals 4 for shaft bushings in pumps, agitators and the like comprises on the one hand a sealing sleeve 8 rotating with the shaft 3, and on the other hand a stationary sealing ring 9 which interacts with the sleeve and bears with an essentially plane and circular-ring-shaped end against a corresponding end on the sealing sleeve 8 to form a sealing surface 10, the seal having, on its atmosphere side located outside the sealing ring, an inlet 12 and an outlet 13 for flushing liquid. In order to make it possible to clean the mechanical seal by intermittent flushing, a pump wheel is mounted on the shaft 3 outside the mechanical seal 4, on the atmosphere side of the latter. A method of keeping such mechanical seals 4 for shaft bushings clean from deposits is characterized in that the seal is flushed intermittently by means of flushing liquid which is circulated by a pump wheel 20 mounted on the shaft. This pump wheel is also used as a seal for the flushing liquid. IMAGE
