PURPOSE:To control molecular orientation in membrane surfaces by applying compressive forces and drawing forces to monomolecular films or multilayer molecular films in a tapered region and further by causing flows to occur forcibly therein. CONSTITUTION:Two or more troughs (a) and (c) having different width are connected by a tapered trough (b), whereby monomolecular films developed on the liquid surface in a wide trough (a) is subjected to pressure by means of a movable barrier 3 so that the films are caused to flow toward a narrow trough (c). And then, by virtue of the compressive forces generated axially in the tapered region (b) and the drawing forces generated in the direction of movement of the barrier 3, molecular orientation in the film surfaces of monomolecular films or multilayer molecular films is controlled evenly.
