PURPOSE: To improve processability at low temp. and high temp. by compounding synthetic hydrocarbon contg. specific hydration polyalkylene and a thixoropic agent, such as calcined silicic acid, and an org. thickener or the like, if necessary thereby preparing a gel. CONSTITUTION: The thixotropic gel is prepd. by compounding a) the synthetic hydrocarbon oil of polymers, such as 1-octene, 1-nonene, 1-decene, 1-undecene, 1-dodecene, b) the thixotropic agent consisting of calcined silicic acid, hydrophobized calcined silicon, hydrophobized settled silicic acid, hydrophobized clay and/or metal soap and, if necessary, c) the org. thickener, mineral oil and/or other additives. The thixotropic gel is adequately usable as a core packing compd. for optical fiber cables and/or cable packing compd.
