Chelating polymers characterised in that they contain units of general formula I: IMAGE in which R denotes -H or -CH3 and X denotes a group of formula IMAGE in which: a = 0 or 1, p is a number which can vary from 1 to 4, Y1 and Y2 denote -H and Z2 then denotes -CO2H; or else, p is a number equal to 1, Y2 denotes -H, Y1 denotes -CH2SH and Z2 then denotes -CO2H; or else p is a number equal to 3 or 4, Y1 and Y2 denote -H and Z2 denotes the group -CH(NH2)-CO2H; or else a = 1, p = 0 and each of Y2 and Z2 then denotes a -CO2H group; and the esters, salts and metal complexes of these polymers; their preparation and their application especially as complexing agents in the industrial or medical field, in particular for trapping the harmful or excess metal ions in the organism and for the preparation of diagnostic reagents for medical imaging.
