The armour piercing shell (10) consists of a round bar of heavy metal. The bar has a number of circumferencetial grooves (2.1-2.8),which form lines of weakeness and extend from the pointed nose (14) in the rearward direction. The bar is enclosed over part of its length by a driving cage (30) formed in four segments and held together by straps (38,40). The number of the circumferential grooves is precisely defined, and there is a zone (21) formed by a taper between the end groove (2.8) and the tail portion (22) of uniform dia.
