In order to influence the immediate electric environment of a living organism, in particular during electrodiagnosis or electrotherapy, a sheet (23) of electrically-conductive plastic is placed in the vicinity of the body (19). An external electrode arrangement (25) is connected to the mat (23) and the latter is in contact with the body by means of a conductive liquid or paste (21). Use of the mat (23) obviates the need to clean the electrode arrangement (25) after treatment. In addition, the mat (23) is disposable, thereby ensuring optimal hygiene for the treated organism. The mat (23) also affords protection from interfering fields.
