Abstract of the DisclosureUltramafic rock material containing or which isserpentinized so as to contain substantially or completelyserpentinized material, or alternatively, clay materialcontaining structural water, is subjected to a temperatureand pressure for a period of time and optionally in thepresence of added elemental or ferrous iron to causedeserpentinization or dehydroxylation and consequentproduction of hydrogen and hydrocarbons and formation of asolid residue containing one or more of magnesium, nickelcalcium or other metal values. When the material isdeserpentinized or dehydroxylated in the vicinity of 700° Cor subsequently heated at between about 700° and 815°C, themineral content of the residue has a transition latticestructure whereby the magnesium, nickel, calcium and othermineral values can be extracted by trituration with mineralacid, e.g., hydrochloric acid, to form an aqueous solution ofthe mineral acid salts of such metal values.
