The paper sheets are fed forward partly overlapping each other, in sets (1) on a conveyor to a control unit. In this unit is a measurement device (10) which effects a series of measurements of the thickness of the sheet set when it is moved with a known speed in relation to the device. The time between two successive measurements is known or measured, and the distance between two adjacent measurement points along the length of the sheet set is also known or can be calculated. The part thickness areas located adjoining measurements points are calculated and added to a total thickness area for the complete sheet set. The measured and calculated total thickness area is compared with a limit value for the nominal thickness area for a sheet set contg. the correct number of sheets.
