The present invention relates to liquid crystal polymers bearing side mesogenic groups of formula: IMAGE in which: X = H, OH, COOH, NH2; R1, R2 and R3 = H, Cl or CH3; R4 and R5 = hydrocarbon radical; M = mesogenic group; the sum n + m + p is between 10 and 20,000; x is a number ranging from 0 to 8. The present invention also relates to a process for the preparation of these polymers, according to which mesogenic groups are grafted onto at least a proportion of the pendant vinyl unsaturations of a polymer which may be a telechelic polybutadiene by means of a (bromoalkyl)diorganosilane. These liquid crystal polymers can be employed especially for the production of solid optical components.
