Thiazol-5-carboxamides of the formula I below are suitable as counteracting agents ("antidote" or "safener") for protecting crop plants, in particular maize, millet, rice, cereals and soyabeans, against the phytotoxic activity of herbicidal agrochemicals, in particular haloacetanilides. The thiazol-5-carboxamides are those of the formula I IMAGE in which A represents an amido radical NR1R2 or a hydrazido radical -NR3NR4(CO)mR5 in which m is zero or one and R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 are as defined in the description.
