A process for treating the surfaces of a polymeric mesh material for use as a separator in an electrochemical cell between an anode and a membrane to obtain a hydrophilic coating comprises (a) removing surface contaminants from the mesh material; (b) contacting the polymeric mesh material with an aqueous acidic titanium halide solution made by mixing together water, a surfactant, titanium halide and an acid collected from HCl, HBr, HF to form an intermediate acidic titanium halide solution and then adding an alkali metal hydroxide to this solution until the pH is about 3.0 to about 4.0; (c) drying the titanium halide solution onto the surface of the polymeric mesh material to form a coating thereon; and (d) converting the coating to a titanium dioxide layer by contacting the coating with an oxidizing agent such as sodium hypochlorite, calcium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide and chlorine dioxide. A hydrophilic coating is obtained without the traditional addition of a surfactant to the electrolyte or coating the separator's polymeric surfaces with a surfactant.
