PURPOSE:To produce the title whisker capable of giving a composite material having improved characteristics at low cost by partially decomposing silicon carbide contained in a silicon carbide whisker and producing silicon nitride and carbide. CONSTITUTION:A multi-element whisker consisting of silicon carbide, silicon nitride and carbon is produced by partially decomposing silicon carbide contained in a silicon carbide whisker having =95wt.% purity and producing silicon nitride and carbon. By the above-mentioned production, the multiple silicon carbide whisker with silicon nitride and carbon is directly produced with large quantities at low cost and in addition, the size of this whisker can be properly controlled by previously selecting the size of the silicon carbide whisker. Further strength and fracture toughness of the composite material reinforced with this whisker are improved because the multiple whisker consists of silicon carbide strengthened with dispersed silicon nitride and carbon in the same whisker.
