The object of the invention is to provide for intensive purification of contaminated soils in conjunction with a compact construction of the treatment stations. The process is a multistage process comprising the following steps: A) dividing into coarsely granular to finely granular soil particle fractions, and magnetic separation of the ferromagnetic or strongly paramagnetic fraction, B) countercurrent extraction in which the thus prepared soil on a filter belt (3) passes through a plurality of acid treatment stations (I-V) and then a rinsing station (VI), the acid and the washwater being recycled into the respective upstream treatment station, C) precipitation of the heavy metals from the acidic heavy metal solution by means of adding alkali, followed by dewatering, so that the end and intermediate products produced are the purified soil, the dewatered heavy-metal concentrate and salt water. The appliance has a revolving belt filter (3) and a multiplicity of acid treatment stations (I-V), as well as a rinsing station (VI). The stations are provided with collection funnels (6) for the heavy metal solution dripping down to the belt filter (3), further with pumps (7) and recycling lines, acid lines and water supply lines, and also with a discharge line for the enriched heavy metal solution (10.1, 10.2; 9; 8; 10).
