The invention relates to a device for the exact recording of the nocturnal grinding of teeth for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. A commercially available EMG device with infinite threshold adjustment is used to record any contraction of the chewing muscles via electrodes, and if a recording threshold is exceeded an audible sound is fed back to the patient via a head set (feedback therapy). The recording threshold is adjusted to be so high that contractions of the chewing muscles caused by clearing one's throat, swallowing, coughing and the like are not recorded. However, since there are also audible grinding sounds below the recording threshold a microphone is connected to a noise detector which triggers an electrical pulse and thus an actuable warning system as a function of a stored sound signal serving as reference signal. This device can also be used as a device indicating nocturnal snoring.
