A powdered, germicidal softening and pre-washing compsn. comprises 20-80 wt.% paraformaldehyde and 20-80 wt.% soda. The compsn. is useful in hospitals and in industrial laundries. The compsn. is effective at only slightly raised temps. and not only kills germs very rapidly and removes proteinaceous and blood stains but also provides a germ-free effluent. A pref. compsn. comprises 50-80 wt.% paraformaldehyde and 20-50 wt.% soda.
