Abstract of the DisclosureThere is disclosed an apparatus and method of recoveringa portion of the waste heat produced in a high temperatureindustrial process,such as a glass melting furnace,where thefurnace has at least a pair of regenerators which arealternately used to preheat the combustion air and serve ashot exhaust heat storage means. The hot exhaust gases fromthe process are passed through a heat exchanger where theheat is indirectly transferred to the clean compressed airat 100 psi from the compressor of a Brayton cycle energyrecovery system with the hot compressed air being expandedin a high performance turbine. The exhaust from the turbinewill be at atmospheric pressure and at a temperature between750°F and 900°F. This turbine exhaust is fed to the oppositeside regenerator as clean preheated combustion air. Oneembodiment is directed to the use of a regenerator that ismade up of primary and secondary sections with the exhaust tothe heat exchanger being taken from a connection betweenthe sections whereby the glass melting furnace is noteffected whether the Brayton cycle system is in operationor the secondary is functioning without the Brayton cycleenergy recovery system.
