The method is for consolidating and stabilising of an area aqueous compressible ground. The surface of the area (1) which lets through water is covered with an airtight layer. The edges (7) around the layer are bent downwards into a peripheral trough (5). The trough is surrounded by a dam (4). The layer covers a part of the bottom of the trough of which the edges are ballasted (10). Consolidating and stabilising is commenced by creating a vacuum under the airtight layer using pipes connected to a vacuum pump (14). The pipes have an inlet under the layer. Due to suction at the edges of the layer, the water in the trough will pass into the ground. The water supply to the trough is sufficient that the water in and under the dam will make a connection with the ground water level under and outside the dam.
