ABSTRACTAn electrode for use in cardiac pacing has a substratecomposed of a material conventionally employed for pacingelectrodes, and a surface layer or film of iridium oxideoverlying the substrate. For use as a stimulating cathodicelectrode and a sensing electrode, the iridium oxide layer isarranged to be in cardiac tissue stimulating relationshipwhen the electrode is in proper position with respect to thepatient is heart. The electrode impresses electrical stimulion the excitable myocardial tissue to provide pacing at verylow stimulation thresholds. At the completion of eachstimulus, the electrode is capable of abruptly sensing,within an interval less than 100 ms thereafter, theelectrical activity of the heart in response to the stimulusto reliably verify capture. The surface of the electrode maybe provided with recesses to which the iridium oxide layermay be confined. An iridium oxide layer may be provided onboth the cathode and the anode for efficient transduction atthe electrode-electrolyte interface formed by the surface ofthe iridium oxide layer and the surrounding body fluid andtissue.
