PURPOSE:To improve the high-temp. oxidation resistance of the title stainless steel, by applying diffusion heat treatment in the method wherein an Al-based plating layer is formed on the surface of stainless steel by a mechanical plating method. CONSTITUTION:A brush flocked with many wires or ribbons or tapes of Al or an Al alloy is brought into contact with the surface of stainless steel, and the brush and the stainless steel are relatively moved. The brush is rubbed on the stainless steel surface to activate the surface, and the plating layer of Al or an Al alloy is mechanically formed on the surface. Diffusion heat treatment is then applied to the plate stainless steel at 700-1,200 deg.C in vacuum or in a nonoxidizing atmosphere, and the diffused layer of Al or an Al alloy (intermetallic compd. and solid soln.) is formed on the stainless steel surface. The stainless steel has excellent resistance to high-temp. oxidation, and the high-temp. oxidation resistance of the steel is not deteriorated even when being bent or rolled.
