PURPOSE:To obtain a synthetic leather rich in excellent design expression, by elastically deforming a release sheet having an uneven pattern for natural leather, applying a colorant thereto, then restoring the surface to the original uneven pattern, applying a synthetic resin to the above-mentioned surface coated with the colorant and laminating a fibrous substrate thereon. CONSTITUTION:A release sheet 13 having an uneven pattern for natural leather is nipped and pressed between a continuously rotating ink roll 11 and backup roll 12 to elastically deform the above-mentioned uneven pattern and a constant amount of a colorant 14 fed to the ink roll 11 is applied to the pattern surface. The surface coated with the colorant is restored to the uneven pattern by elasticity of its own and a thin film (14a) of the colorant is then formed thereon. A synthetic resin and an adhesive 15 are applied to the coated surface and a fibrous substrate 16 is then laminated to remove the release sheet and afford the aimed synthetic leather 17 having excellent design expression for natural leather.
