The invention relates to a method for using a piezoelectric transducer of the Tonpilz type alternatively as a transmitter and as a broadband receiver and piezoelectric transducers for this application. BR/ A Tonpilz-type transducer comprises a stack 1 of pairs of piezoelectric chips 4 separated by electrodes 5 which is interposed between a horn 2 and a counter-emitter 3. A transmitter 6 is connected between a horn 2 and a counter-emitter 3. An emitter 6 is connected by a conductor 10a to every other electrode. A pair of plates 8a, 8b neighboring the counterweight is separated from the others by an insulator 7. The two electrodes 5a, 5b which surround this group are connected in parallel to a receiver 9 and, through two diodes D1, D2 mounted in opposition on a common grounding conductor 10b.
