An arrangement for the positioning of an oil boom or similar alongside a ship (5). Amongst other things the invention permits the simple and effective positioning of oil booms at to all intents and purposes any point on and along the side of a ship, and in such a way that the boom is not directly attached to the side of the ship and yet is provided with an oil-tight connection, permits the positioning and connection of the boom/booms without the need for any fixed or permanent devices or fittings, or for operations having to be performed on the vessel, and makes it easier for the oil-receiving ship to steer and manoeuvre better and to bring the oil to or into the vicinity of the ship in the boundary layer of the ship and to collect the oil in this still water, where it is very much easier to operate the oil collecting devices directly from the ship, and also to dispense with the need for one ship in the sweeping manoeuvre, so as not to be dependent on combined operations by three ships, which has been found in practice to be to all intents and purposes unworkable. The boom in question can be attached to a number of cables (1) etc., running around the hull (4) of a ship on the side of the ship and is so arranged as to be held extended from the ship to form a collecting pocket.
