PURPOSE:To determine the quantity of silver by irradiating radiations onto a photographic film to excite the silver atoms thereon and to generate a characteristic X-ray and detecting the intensity thereof. CONSTITUTION:Am-241 of about several Ci is used as an excitation ray source A and alpha rays are passed through a collimator B and are irradiated onto the film fixed to a film fixture C to excite the silver atoms on the film and to generate the characteristic X-ray the X-ray is detected by a pure Ge detector E via a collimator D. The detected intensity (count rate) is measured by an analyzer F of multi-channels or single channel. The quantity of the silver in an emulsion can be measured regardless of the blackening degree of the film and the accuracy of the surface density of the silver halide in a film emulsion is easily controlled according to the above-mentioned constitution.
