IMPROVEMENT OF RESIDUAL STRESS IN WELD ZONE OF PIPING

PURPOSE:To convert the residual tensile stress in the weld zone of a piping to residual compressive stress, by restraining both ends of the welded piping and cooling the same over the longitudinal direction thereof, thereby making the tensile stress in the weld zone larger than the yield stress. CONSTITUTION:The end parts on both sides sandwiching the weld zone 2 of a piping 1 are restrained. The parts of the piping 1 apart from the zone 2 in an axial direction are cooled from the outside or inside of the pipe 1 or both inside and outside with suitable coolers 3. Then, tensile stress is applied to the weld zone 2 and the tensile stress is made larger than the yield stress to yield the zone 2 by tension, whereby the residual tensile stress in the zone 2 is converted to residual compressive stress or the considerably reduced residual tensile stress. The stress corrosion cracking and fatigue cracking in the zone 2 are obviated by the above-mentioned method.
