The invention relates to a process for the production of steel rails with low residual stresses by means of roller straightening. Before entering the roller straightening machine, the rails, which have been cooled to below 100 DEG C following hot rolling, are heated in the rail web to 100-500 DEG C, preferably about 150-350 DEG C, and after straightening, cool to room temperature in air. This measure reduces the longitudinal tensile stresses in the rail head and foot to below 50 N/mm2 and thus increases the fracture resistance of the rail. While a rail straightened without heating of the web exhibits the characteristic a represented in Fig. 2 as regards its residual stresses, the considerably more advantageous characteristic b is established in the rail straightened in accordance with the invention.
