An apparatus for determining the content of suspended matter in water by concentration and weighing is provided with a concentration device, preferably a hydrocyclone, which continuously separates out a concentrated aqueous sediment paste from a known sample water stream and continuously feeds this to the interior of a weighing scale arranged below water, that is operating under buoyancy. By this means, over a relatively long time period until the weighing scale is full, the suspended matter content can be determined in a direct on-line process.
