The work rolls are removed from the stand, and then the upper work roll is removed to leave the lower work roll (3). A crane is next used to locate a plate (5) on the chocks (1,2) of roll (3). On the bottom surface of plate (5) is a recess corresp. with the contour of roll (3); whereas the top surface of plate (5) is fitted with hydraulic cylinders below thrust pads. The upper back-up roll (16) is next placed on the thrust pads, and the assembly is moved back into the roll stand. A pressurised hydraulic fluid is a special test circuit is fed into the hydraulic cylinders so the stress- strain characteristics of the roll stand can be measured and compared with desired values. Used in computer controlled rolling mill trains using load cells to adjust roll gaps, where an accurate allowance can be made for the "spring" in each stand, thus improving the dimensions of the rolled prod., e.g. strip.
