Novel 3-hydroxy-4-alkyloxyphenyl heterocyclic aromatic carboxylate compounds are disclosed which are particularly well suited as sweetening agents in foodstuff. Disclosed is furthermore a process for modifying the sweetness perception in a foodstuff by adding said sweetening agent to a foodstuff as well as foodstuff containing the above sweetening agents.
