- 12 -AbstractThe present invention relates to a nonlinearoptical time-division multiplexer and demultiplexer formedfrom a cascaded plurality of triggerable optical switchingelements.In accordance with the present invention, an exemplarytriggerable optical switching element (15) comprises anonlinear optical material (20) disposed in, for example, aring resonator arrangement. The nonlinear optical material(20) exhibits an index of refraction which is a function ofthe intensity of the light passing therethrough. Anexemplary switching element is responsive to two separateoptical pulse streams (A,B), where neither pulse streamcomprises a sufficient intensity to cause the element toswitch. A trigger pulse (ITRIG) is utilized whichcomprises a sufficient intensity to stimulate switching theoutput from a first optical pulse stream (IA) to a secondoptical pulse stream (IB). An external synchronizationmeans may be employed to adjust the arrival of the triggerpulse in the nonlinear material (20) so as to allow thetime-division multiplexing or demultiplexing to beachieved.
