Twisted yarn is false twisted between nips and further fibres are applied to the yarn surface during twisting to form a multilayer twisted yarn. The composite multilayer yarn is formed at high speed without the need for a binder to keep the fibres together. Pref. airborne fibres are fed in a helical airstream to be twisted and laid on a roll. The yarn is nipped by rolls during subsequent false twisting. Additional fibres are fed to the yarn being twisted via duct. The partially finished yarn can be wound up on roll, or further fibres are added and/or core yarn is fed to the twisted yarn on roll. The yarn is held on rolls by internal suction ducts.
