The equaliser for digital signals, corrects for interference between symbols. Interference is caused by the generation of a leading and trailing edges of the pulse which overlap the following and preceding pulses on account of non-ideal characteristics of the transmission channel. Algebraic addition of the trailer compensation signal to each pulse is effected for non-linear correction derived by feedback of the preceding pulse; subject A decision making process determines the correction. For the non-linear compensation of the leading edge, the symbol derived after the decision making process is used to obtain an estimate of the interfering leading pulse extension which is subtracted from the pulse as corrected for the trialing edge extension and is followed by a second decision making process for the further correction. The method is applicable also to phase modulated signals.
