A free-standing electrostatic dust or impurity separator is fitted adjacent to the spray booth, with the booth wall part orientated at a slight distance from it, so that free acess is afforded service personnel. Fresh air enters through the upper part of the booth, and air currents polluted with paint particles and other impurities pass outwards via the base of the booth, to be cleaned in a prim. stage. This stage uses water which is fed to the electrostatic separator through apertures in its base part. Cleaning in the second stage removes at least the main part of any residual paint particles and fluid droplets, and involves the use of fluids which bind with solvent vapours which may be present. The fluids normally involve oil emulsions.
