Coalescing e.g. oil in water-oil mixt. into larger droplets - by passing down through small, supported on larger particle layer followed by upward flow into upper layer contg. vertically movable screen
The method is for e.g. sepg. oil from water by passing the mixt. downwards through a granular bed in which the oil coalesces into larger droplets, followed by an upward flow through the bed to remove retained oil. This bed comprises at least one layer of small-size particles supported on at least one layer of coarser particles. During the upward flow phase, the uniform distribution of this flow over the bed surface area is ensured by means of at least one screen which is arranged above the lower boundary of the small particle layer and has a mesh width of the order of the particle size. This screen is pref. vertically movable (e.g. between stops etc.) in the bed.
