The prods. are produced utilising ferrosilicon contg. waste materials by comminuting and homogenising the waste, mixing with at least the calculated amt. of basic slag forming material for the free silicon-dioxide present, and with the calculated amt. of steel and/or cast iron swarf for the desired ferrosilicon prod. and treating the resulting mixt. electro-thermally at a temp. pref. below 1570 deg.C, taking into account the heat generated in exothermic reactions. The resulting ferrosilicon can be sepd. from the slag, or it can be discharged with the slag onto calculated amts. of other metals, i.e. magnesium or one or more of the rare earth metals. After the alloying process is over the resulting auxiliary alloys are sepd. from the slag. The slag is opt. used in building or lining materials. - The ferro-silicon alloying equipment consists of an upper and a lower carbon lined runner fixed to each other by a loose joint and pref. sepd. from each other by a refractory concrete slab. The opening connecting the two runners is fitted with a plugging device which has an open and a shut position. Magnesite powder is added to the carbon lining of the lower runner.
