In the course of a process for the direct reduction of iron ore or iron oxide pellets to give sponge iron in a reduction furnace (1), hot reduction gas is injected through a reduction-gas inlet (4), the gas flowing upwards through the descending charge, reducing the iron ore or the iron oxide pellets in the process and being drawn off as top gas through a top-gas outlet (5). In a cooling zone (9) below the reduction zone (8) the sponge iron is cooled by means of a cooling gas which is supplied via a cooling-gas inlet (6) and is drawn off via a cooling-gas outlet (7) above the cooling gas inlet but below the reduction inlet. In the process, a portion of the cooling gas is shunted off and fed to the reduction zone, this portion being replaced by cooled and cleaned top gas. The cooling gas drawn off is cooled and cleaned in a cooling-gas scrubber (10), is passed through a compressor (11) and then cooled once more by a cooling-gas cooler (19). The cooling-gas fraction fed to the reduction zone is shunted off outside the furnace and admixed to the reduction gas upstream of the reduction-gas inlet, while the top gas replacing said cooling-gas fraction is admixed in, or upstream of, the cooling-gas cooler.
