PURPOSE:To increase the number of sheets of original that can be scanned in unit time and to improve the efficiency of processing by controlling the speed of paper feeding properly according to interval of originals. CONSTITUTION:A microcomputer 20 receives detection signals from original sensors 10-6-10-8 to an input port, and also receives a pulse signal for rotating a pulse motor 10-1 to an interruption input port, and calculates the position of the original by counting the pulses. Further, the microcomputer 20 determines a paper feeding speed based on calculated position of the original, and gives a value instructing the speed to a driving device 30 from an output port. That is, in the case where the distance between the front end of the next original and a reading line 101 of the original is more than L at the time of completion of reading of preceding original, the paper feeding speed is changed from the normal speed V1 to V2 (V2V1).
